Which diseases do core vaccines protect against?

The core vaccine for dogs, also known as DHPP, protects against canine distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza and parvovirus. Even though the rabies vaccine is a non-core vaccine, we strongly recommend it, since rabies is a deadly disease.

My dog spends time in parks and boarding facilities. Are there additional vaccines that the clinic recommends?

If your pet spends time in boarding facilities, or visits dog parks or pet groomers, you may want to get your pet vaccinated against leptospirosis and Bordetella (kennel cough).

When should I start vaccinating my dog?

You can bring your dog in for their first shots as of eight weeks old, which is when the antibodies passed through the mother’s milk become less effective. After the second shot, there are two other monthly boosters required.

How often does my adult dog need to be vaccinated?

Once your dog has received their first vaccinations, booster shots should be given every year or every three years. The time between the initial shot and the boosters varies, depending on the vaccine. Your veterinary can give you more precise information about follow-up shots.
