Our veterinarians will discuss spaying/neutering with you on your first visit to the clinic. We encourage you to ask us any questions you have about sterilization.
Spaying (ovariohysterectomy) is a surgical procedure for female animals that involves removing the uterus and ovaries. Spaying is performed with your pet under anesthesia. They will usually stay at the clinic for the whole day.
Neutering is a surgical procedure to prevent reproduction that involves removal of a male animal’s testicles. Just like spaying, neutering is performed with your cat or dog under anesthesia, and, in most cases, your pet will stay at our clinic afterwards for the day.
It’s beneficial to have your pet spayed or neutered for many reasons. Spaying or neutering your cat or dog reduces or eliminates the risk of some kinds of cancer and disease, such as pyometra (uterine infection), breast cancer in female animals and prostate cancer in males.
Spaying or neutering has also been proven to reduce unwanted behaviour like running away, aggressiveness and urine marking.
Spaying and neutering also helps reduce animal overpopulation, which remains a major issue in Québec.
