Microchipping

The only permanent and reliable way to identify a lost pet and ensure a happy reunion.

Interested in permanent identification for your cat or dog? Microchipping is a safe, easy option. It’s also been mandatory for Montréal pet owners since January 1, 2020. To learn more about this law, review this link.

What is a microchip?

A microchip is an implant about the size of a grain of rice. It is inserted between an animal’s shoulder blades using a syringe. Once registered, the microchip contains your contact information. Remember the chip is linked to this information, so be sure to update it if you move or change phone numbers.

How does a microchip work?

Microchips can be read using a scanner. Most shelters and veterinary clinics have one on hand.

Is a microchip a GPS?

A microchip is not a GPS, so unfortunately you won’t be able to track your pet’s movements. However, it remains a very effective way for you to be contacted if ever your pet is lost.
